Chapter Twelve

Ellie got off the bus at the Broadway and realized she’d lost her shopping list. Surely she’d put it in her handbag before she set out? Or had she left it on the kitchen table?

Well, she’d have to try to remember what she needed. She must get some money from the bank first. Then buy some gloves. Then do the food shopping.

If she hadn’t left Kate standing guard over Thomas, Ellie would have indulged herself in a coffee and a piece of cake at one of the cafes in the Broadway. As it was, she took a taxi back home with all her bags. One of these days she’d master shopping by internet, but at the moment she could only do it if Kate stood over her. Besides, for one person, it was hardly worth it.

There was another flurry of snow as she paid off the driver back at the house, but it wasn’t settling on the ground. Just as well.

The house was warm and welcoming, but quiet. Too quiet? Thomas was still asleep in the sitting room, but there was no sign of Kate. Instead, that nice woman Maggie, from the choir, was in Ellie’s kitchen, knitting something pink and reading a magazine.

‘All’s well,’ said Maggie, helping Ellie in with her shopping. ‘Jean phoned and asked if I could help out for a bit.’

‘Kate’s all right, not been rushed off to hospital? Wait a minute. Don’t you have masses to do, clearing up after the wedding? Which was lovely, by the way. Thomas did give you my apologies, didn’t he? You know what happened?’

Maggie had the sweetest of smiles. She lifted her fingers from her knitting to tick off the points Ellie had raised. ‘Kate’s fine. She left a note for you. She’d remembered a dental appointment so she phoned Jean, who asked if I could spare an hour to look after Thomas. I’m fine. There’s hardly any clearing up to be done, and what there is can wait. Yes, of course I heard what happened to you. Poor Mrs Dawes. That was a dreadful thing. And poor Thomas. These men will overdo it, if we don’t look after them, won’t they.’

‘True. Coffee? You should have helped yourself. No? We ought to call ourselves The Friends of Thomas.’

‘I don’t think he ought to sleep on much longer, or he won’t sleep tonight.’

‘I’ll wake him when I’ve got my breath back.’ Ellie could see Mr Hurry’s flier propped up against the toaster. So she had left her list here. Kate had scrawled P.T.O. on it. Ellie turned it over: Your solicitor phoned. You can get him on this number before twelve. Followed by a mobile phone number.

Ellie excused herself to Maggie, and went into the hall to phone Mark Hadley.

He seemed slightly more awake than before, but the news wasn’t good.

‘Neil’s been up in court, charged with assaulting a police officer. I managed to see him in the cells beforehand and he says it was more of a jostle than an assault, but the police say otherwise.
